O'Neil tried out for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early months of 2005 while still at high school. She made it into the top 100 rounds because the judges were thrilled at her singing performances. O'Neil was given high marks by the jury. But she was a victim of significant defeats during the top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. She was placed in the bottom three, followed by the second place. They were stunned by the outcome and urged fans to vote for those with great singing talent, like Melissa. O'Neil's performances were so good that she never placed in the bottom three once in the future. She was the judge. Werner was confident, following two other breathtaking performances, that O'Neil would be the winner from her Canadian Idol competition, as well as the first woman and the youngest contestant in history in the wake of the September 7 finals in 2005. O'Neil received a call immediately from Canadian PM Paul Martin, congratulating on her win of Canadian Idol.
