Annette Funicello had just turned 13 when Walt Disney, the studio's director of production, spotted her performing in a Fullerton California amateur Swan Lake. Funicello did not get an be a part of the Mickey Mouse Club cast in the first season and much to her Mickey Mouse Club colleagues' chagrin. Although produced by AIP the scripts were personally checked and approved by Walt Disney, in order to preserve Annette's spotless image.
